Festive sales are a good time to upgrade the kitchen. Appliances usually see some of the steadiest discounts of the year. But counter space is limited, so here's what we think is worth it in an Indian kitchen, and what to check before you pay.

Worth it

Mixer grinder (750W)

The workhorse. If yours struggles with idli batter or makes a burning smell, it's time. Look for 750W, three jars (wet, dry, chutney), and a good warranty on the motor.

Air fryer (4 to 5 litres)

Great for samosa reheats, tikkas and fries with a spoon of oil. A 4 to 5 litre basket suits a family of four. Digital controls are nice. A basket that goes in the dishwasher is nicer.

Water purifier

If you still boil water or rely on cans, this is the most useful upgrade on the list. Get your water's TDS checked first: RO is needed for high TDS, while UV+UF is enough for municipal water with low TDS.

Electric kettle

Cheap, fast, and used ten times a day: tea, Maggi, hot water for the bottle. Pick stainless steel inside.

Worth it if you'll use it

OTG oven

Perfect if someone at home bakes or wants to try. Go for 25 litres or more with convection, so a cake tin fits comfortably.

Kitchen chimney

Makes a huge difference with Indian tadka, but needs proper installation and a duct. Filterless auto-clean models need less maintenance.

We'd usually skip

  • Single-purpose gadgets (sandwich maker, popcorn maker) unless someone really wants one.
  • Very cheap induction cooktops without a known service network.
  • "Combo deals" that bundle things you didn't plan to buy.

Before you pay

  • Check the brand's service centres in your city.
  • Compare the price history, not the MRP. Here's how to spot fake discounts.
  • Note the warranty start date and register the product online.

Frequently asked questions

What size air fryer is right for a family of four?+

A 4 to 5 litre basket works well for most families of four. Smaller baskets mean cooking in several batches.

How many watts should a mixer grinder have for Indian cooking?+

750W is a good middle ground for chutneys, masalas and batters. 500W models struggle with hard spices and idli batter.
