A greener Diwali doesn't mean a dull one. Most of these swaps are cheaper than what they replace, and a few of them support local potters and artisans who depend on festive sales.
- Clay diyas instead of plastic electric diyas. They're biodegradable, cheap, and they make the house smell like Diwali. Handmade clay diyas
- Flower and natural-colour rangoli. Marigold petals, rice flour and haldi look beautiful, and they're easy to sweep and compost.
- LED lights with timers. Warm white LEDs use a fraction of the power of old bulbs, and a timer stops them burning all night. LED lights with timer
- Reusable decor. Fabric torans and metal lanterns last for years. Reusable torans
- Wrap gifts in cloth or newspaper. Try a dupatta, a jute bag or a kraft paper wrap with a marigold tucked in. Jute gift bags
- Gift plants. Tulsi, money plant or a small succulent. Indoor plants
- Buy local sweets in your own dabba. Less packaging, and fresher too.
- Steel or copper over disposable. If you're hosting, use steel plates and glasses instead of plastic. Steel plate sets
- Quieter celebrations. Pets, elders and babies will thank you. If you do burst crackers, choose green crackers where your city allows them, and keep to the permitted timings.
- Donate before you buy. Diwali cleaning always turns up clothes and toys someone else could use.
For pet parents
Keep pets indoors on Diwali night, close the windows, play soft music, and set up a quiet corner with their bed. If your pet gets very anxious, speak to your vet a few days early.
