Lakshmi Puja Samagri Checklist for Diwali 2026

Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Every family does it a little differently, so treat this as a master list and skip what your tradition doesn't use. We've grouped it so you can shop once and stop worrying.

Idols and the puja chowki

• Lakshmi and Ganesh idols, or a framed picture (see idols)
• A wooden chowki or low stool (see chowkis)
• Red or yellow cloth to cover the chowki
• A kalash (copper or brass) with a coconut and mango leaves (see kalash)

Diyas and lights

• Clay diyas, at least 11 (see diya packs)
• Cotton wicks (batti) and ghee or mustard oil
• A big akhand diya for the night
• Matchbox, and a lighter as backup

Puja essentials

• Roli (kumkum), haldi, chandan and akshat (whole rice)
• Agarbatti and dhoop (see dhoop)
• Camphor (kapoor) for aarti
• Kalava or mauli thread
• Puja thali and a small bell (see thali sets)
• Gangajal in a small lota

Flowers and offerings

• Marigold garlands and loose petals
• Lotus flowers, if you can find them. Lotus is Lakshmi's flower.
• Paan leaves, supari, cloves and elaichi
• Coins, and new notes if that's your family custom
• Kheel-batashe, and sweets for prasad
• Fruits: banana and seasonal fruit

For the business or account books (optional)

Many traders and shop owners do Chopda Pujan alongside Lakshmi Puja. Keep a new account book (bahi khata), a red pen and a swastik sticker ready. (see bahi khata)

Shop early, shop once

Local markets get very crowded on Choti Diwali, and online delivery slots fill up. Order the non-perishable items (diyas, thali, idols, dhoop, wicks) by 4 November, and pick up flowers and sweets fresh on the day.
